Biography

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born on 15th April 1990 in Paris, France where she lived until she was five years old with her younger brother Alex and lawyer parents, Jacqueline and Chris. When Emma turned five, the family moved back to England.

When Emma returned, she joined Lynam's, a nursery school for the prestigious Dragon School in Oxford where she found her interest in poetry and the performing arts. Her talents quickly grew and were did not go without notice. When she was just seven years old, she won the Daisy Pratt poetry competition for her recital of The Sea by James Reeves.

Prior to this, Emma had her eye set on greater things. She once said to her grandmother (whose maiden name is Duerre) that when she grew up, she wanted to be a fairy, a princess and a matress (she meant 'actress'!).

In September 1998, at eight years old, Emma moved to the Dragon School where she continued to grow and shine academically. She was a member of the debating team and combined it with a love of the arts and sports. Her interest in the performing arts continued to grow.

When Emma was nine, she found herself in an assembly at the age of nine along with several other classmates. It would be this day that would change her life forever. She had been chosen among the select few to audition for the role of Hermione Granger. The casting team for the film had been to schools all over Britain trying to find the right person for the role. They visited scores of schools that had been known for its strong drama department. Emma was so excited, particularily because she loved the Harry Potter books! Coincendtially, her favorite character was/is Hermione! Her parents tried to make her understand that her chances were very slim to prepare her for disappointment, but she was determined to get the role.

On a Monday morning in August with eight auditions under her belt, Emma was called again to Leavesden Studios. She thought it was just for another screen test. She met with producer David Heyman who introduced her to her new co-stars; 11-year old Daniel Radcliffe, who was to play Harry Potter and 12-year old Rupert Grint who was to play Ronald Weasley. At 10 years old, Emma was told that she had been chosen to play Hermione Granger.

The rest is history.
